Dear Friends,

The second Sunday after Easter has often been referred to as ‘Low Sunday’ due to attendance in churches being lower and lacking in energy, particularly in comparison to the height of Easter celebrations. However, we as followers of Jesus know that Easter doesn’t end with Easter day. It is a continuous journey. In the liturgical calendar, it marks the beginning of a new season, Eastertide, which is 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. This is a time we can consciously and intentionally live out our lives as though every day were Easter, knowing and believing that Christ rises and breathes his Spirit into each of us in our every day.

Sustaining ourselves through our faith journey which has its highs and lows; hills and valleys can be a challenge.

On Easter Monday, my family and I, quite on the spur of the moment visited Saffron Walden. We had heard there was a maze there and well, it got the children excited. When we got there we found out it was more of a labyrinth than a maze and that it had some history. It is the largest turf-cut labyrinth in the world and one of surviving eight turf labyrinths in England. The original date is unknown but it is known to have first been restored in 1699. If you were to walk the whole length it would be 1.5k long.

All of us enjoyed the experience of walking through that labyrinth. It didn’t take us too long to reach the end, maybe around 15 minutes, but there were times on that winding pathway when I wondered whether I was going the right way. Had I missed a turn? Was I going backwards without realising it? Am I going back to where I was before? Will I reach the end?

Maybe that is how our journey of faith may seem at times. We feel as though we are taking one step forward and two steps back. We wonder whether we are heading in the right direction. We wonder whether we will make the finish line.

We did make it to the end of that labyrinth and all we had to do was follow the bricked path. Apparently, labyrinths are different from mazes because mazes are full of dead ends and are designed to get you lost. A labyrinth has only one path that always leads to the centre. You cannot get lost if you follow the path. Labyrinths are ancient pathways often used as a way of prayer. The winding path helps to unwind, to let go and ultimately find rest in God.

May we remember and trust that, even when our faith journey feels like a winding path with dead ends, obstacles, hills and valleys, if we follow the path and stay focused on Christ our guide, we will and can find rest in God.

May God bless you and keep you throughout Eastertide,
Hannah

Dear Friends,

I wonder how your Lenten journey is progressing for you. I went on a Regional Probationers Retreat a few weeks ago and found myself in the peaceful and tranquil countryside of Launde Abbey in Leicester. It was interesting to be surrounded by more sheep than people there. This retreat had in numerous ways forced me to stop, be still, become aware of my surroundings and simply be. It beckoned me to slow down. I say it ‘forced’ me because I find stopping and being still very hard. My mind is always working and I’m constantly thinking about what I ought to be doing next. One of the key themes for this retreat was about taking our sabbath, and how we might tarry on our life and ministry’s journey.

Lent is a time of journeying to the cross with Jesus to meet him at his resurrection. However, it is not defined by a journey we make with haste. It is a journey that can hopefully encourage us to slow down, be still and tarry. Jesus also took his time to walk to the cross. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus asks his friends to ‘Stay here and keep watch with me…keep watch and pray.’ (Matthew 26:38, 41). He encourages them to stop, notice, pray and be still a while with him. In our Lenten and life’s journey, there are times we may need to stop and tarry in solitude, but as Jesus spent a moment of stillness with his friends, we too need our church and community to be alongside us as we reflect, recharge and catch up with ourselves.

• Are you one of those who find it hard to stop and be still?
• Are you giving too much that you feel you have nothing to give at times?
• How do you take your sabbath? How might you stop and tarry with Jesus?
• What might you notice about yourself and those around you?
• How might it feel to rest and give all our anxious productivity to God? Can we have the confidence that God will hold things together when we take time to recharge?

We will be gathering on Maundy Thursday morning at 10am for a Love/Agape Feast to think about the way Jesus shared a meal with his disciples during his ministry and in particular the night before he went to the cross. There will also be a Churches Together in Stanway Good Friday Walk of Witness at 12 noon outside Starbucks if anyone is interested in joining. May these offer moments for us as a church and a community to reflect, slow down and be still together as we listen to Jesus’ call to ‘stay here a while and keep watch’.

As you continue this Lenten walk to the Easter resurrection, may you find rest when needed, find stillness and find your sabbath, for, even God rested on the seventh day, ‘rested from all his work’. (Genesis 2:2-3).

God bless, and may the joy of Easter be with you,
Hannah

Dear Friends,

A few weekends ago, my family and I visited Dedham for the first time. I had heard so much about the beautiful village and well, it’s Constable Country! There was plenty to be excited about. We attempted to do the walk partway towards Flatford Mill along the River Stour. However, we realised about a quarter way into the walk that our footgear was not suitable for what this walk would entail. We should have worn our wellies! The further we got the muddier it became and soon enough we were squelching through thick gloopy mud for the rest of the walk. Looking back at that experience, I realised I had been so focused on looking at the ground and where I was stepping that I hadn’t taken the time to drink in the beauty of the scenery around me.

Sometimes when we’re so focused on looking down or looking into the details we may miss the bigger picture. The details are important, but I wonder whether there might be a tendency to be ‘stuck in the mud’ if we never look up to see the fuller landscape around us.

February is a busy month. There will be plenty of the finer details to focus on. Especially as we yearn for the end of winter to arrive and look for the small signs of spring emerging, our attention may be drawn to the tiny buds that begin to sprout up here and there. Each bud holds the bigger picture of new life, hope and warmer weather.

Lent comes earlier this year. We begin our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday which will be preceded by Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day when traditionally all the sugar was used up in the household to prepare for Lent. Some of us may choose to either give up or take on something during Lent. How are you hoping or planning to mark Lent this year? No matter how we choose to follow this Lenten journey, may we be reminded that all the smaller details of this season ultimately lead us to the bigger picture of Easter and Christ’s resurrection. The message of Easter is the backdrop to Lent and all we believe in as Christians.

May you discover afresh the broader landscape of God’s love for you as you journey through this Lent. I feel the words said at the moment of baptism can have meaning for all of us as we ponder on the bigger picture of what Jesus did for us.

For you Jesus Christ came into the world;
For you he lived and showed God’s love;
For you he suffered death on the Cross;
For you he triumphed over death,
Rising to newness of life;
For you he prays at God’s right hand:
All this for you,
Before you could know anything of it.
(Methodist Worship Book)

God bless,
Hannah
